As 2017 has started, we are excited and grateful for another year here at Push The Rock Zambia! So far, this rainy season has been one of the best in the past 15 years, and there are still a couple months left of potential rain. As the Lord blesses this land with good rains, we watch the crops grow, the dams and rivers fill, and the cattle get fat! It is amazing to be surrounded by greenery and new growth, a promise of what is to come at harvest time.
The rains are a good reminder that we too need to grow. Each of us. As believers our journey in Christ must move more towards Him each day, just like the maize that reaches skyward with each passing rainfall. Recently some of our boys, led by one of our young volunteers, put together a skit and song to share at a local church service. As they finished up, one of them, a teenager named Sunday, walked back up to the front of the church. Unafraid and passionate, he summarized what they had shared – the importance for us as followers of Jesus to be the hands and feet of Christ.
Three years ago these boys simply came here to play soccer every day.
The other day at our rec center, we took this photo.
Four young men ‘lounging’ in our little library…reading…relaxing…enjoying the afternoon. Three years ago, these boys just came for soccer. Now they come nearly every day because they want to be here, regardless of the activity. They appreciate the freedom they have here, the activities, and the love and support they receive from our staff.
These two snapshots are just an example of how we have seen growth here. From ‘doing’ soccer with 10-20 boys in the afternoons three years ago, things here have evolved into so much more. We see hundreds of children each week through our various activities, culminating with our Fantastic Friday program to close the school week. The Lord has certainly been faithful in how ministry continues to evolve and expand here.
We are excited. And we look forward to 2017 in anticipation for more greatness. Our vision for this year includes continued staff development, completing our sports ‘complex,’ beginning a new housing building project, a deeper focus on discipleship and mentoring our youth, a disc golf tournament, and much more!
