Tenerife Welch Team Update #3 April 4, 2017

Tuesday, April 4

Today was a busy but fantastic day.  We had an early start this morning with breakfast at 7am!  We were at Galeon again today to teach basketball (their PE class) to the rest of the classes.  When we arranged to be at the school, the administration wanted all their students to experience Push The Rock.  So that’s why we had so many kids today.  We saw 374 kids this morning from 8:00am-2:00pm.  We again had to be creative with as many as 77 kids at one time with 2 hoops and 28 basketballs.  Camp went very well and the kids (and teachers) seemed to really enjoy it.  A couple groups spoke English, so that was a nice change for the team, although, they are doing very well in Spanish.   During recess time, it was great to see many of the students from yesterday find the coaches and talk to them.  They were disappointed that today is our last day with them.  After camp, we headed back to los Bomberos for lunch and had team time.

After a little rest, we packed up and headed to San Lorenzo, a little town about 20 minutes away.  We ran stations for their club teams from 5:30-7:00pm.  One of the players did an excellent job of sharing the sportsmanship thought on teamwork, with not only the kids but also with their parents who were sitting nearby.  The clinic was run very similarly to the morning, rotating 57 kids through 6 stations.  It was great to see the excitement and energy the kids had at each station.  After the clinic, we played their girls’ club team.  Some of the girls attended our camp last summer, so it was great to reconnect with them.  We had a great opportunity to show the kids, that stayed to cheer us on, what teamwork is all about.  Our team played very well and pulled ahead quickly.  We ended up winning the game by a lot.  After the game, we took pictures with the team and headed back to los Bomberos for dinner.

We are excited about the new opportunities that await us tomorrow and look forward to investing in the kids.

Blessings,

Kim Schlonecker, for the team.
